Summer School
2008 DC Public Schools Summer School, District-wide Information

Summer School will be offered to elementary, middle and high school students attending District of Columbia Public Schools.
Dates: June 30 - August 1, 2008
Elementary
The areas of the elementary program are reading, writing and mathematics. In Reading Language Arts, teachers will use the literacy program Story Town. Teachers will model reading strategies and teach children to write with purpose, utilizing big books, core books, trade books, leveled readers, and writers’ companions. The math program is First Place Math. It allows teachers to provide differentiated instruction, focusing on the specific skills each student needs in order to reach the next level of proficiency.

Middle

The middle school program will target students who have not achieved grade level proficiency in reading and mathematics, according to grades and the DC Benchmark Assessment System. Students will receive support in reading, writing, and mathematics. The reading program will focus on comprehension, and teachers will foster high level thinking by modeling practices of good readers. An important portion of the program will be assist students’ transition from elementary to middle school and prepare rising 8th graders for their last year of middle school.
